One of the oldest phrases used by parents, and their parents before them, is “Don’t give me any of your lip!!!” In fact, it’s such an old school phrase that many kids today have no idea what it means at all. The phrase means “Don’t talk back to me” or “Don’t argue with me.”
The phrase should be changed to “Give me some lip for the camera” as one of the hottest current fashion trends is the “Statement Lip.” By the way, you read the singular use of “lip” correctly. It’s not in style for your top and bottom lip to undergo augmentation. The fashion rage is to just augment the top lip. Currently one of the hottest outpatient procedures among fashion style icons, it’s also viewed as a fun, flirty fashion statement of youthful glamour.
In a February 2015 interview with ABC News, AOB Med Spa National Medical Director Dr. Jody Levine said, "Lip augmentation has certainly been on the rise as it appears that more and more beauty trends and celebrities are touting the statement lip as a fashion accessory."
One of the main driving forces behind the trend, according to Dr. Levine, is a desire among celebrities to look younger. "Plumper, fuller lips can exude youthfulness and femininity and can certainly make a beauty statement when lip color is worn. Some patients have naturally thin top lips, while others notice significant volume loss in the lips over time," she said.
Plus, we all know how important it is to make a “wow statement” when taking a selfie. Having lips without volume means they are less projected in photos and also suffer from lines that can form around the edges of the lips. The lack of plumpness in the lips makes for less of a fashion statement impact when posing for a selfie or for professional photographers.
One of the biggest fashion faux pas problems desperately avoided by celebrities is the dreaded “trout pout.” In case you don’t know, “trout pout” is when a woman has very big lips that are unnaturally swollen thanks to excessive collagen injections in the lips. While the injections are meant to enhance the appearance of the lips, they result in a swollen appearance referred to as “trout pout.”
One of the simplest ways to avoid these unnatural looking lips is to just inject the edge of the lip. By injecting the edge, as opposed to including the middle of the lip in the injection, the danger of having a pouty look is avoided. The injection results in a more natural full look that succeeds in making a fashion statement without the giant lips.
Thankfully, there is hope for those whose lips have been plumped beyond a natural look. A patient can get rid of the unnatural plumpness by visiting a doctor. The physician can dissolve the excessive plumpness with an injection of hyaluronidase. The hyaluronidase increases the absorption of fluids or medicines that are injected into your skin and helps to dissolve them faster than simply waiting for their normal life cycle to expire.
If you don’t like your new look but aren’t willing to visit a doctor (again) about your lips, the plumpness and lip inflation will disappear over time.
While fashion trends come and go, the “statement lip” seems to be on point to remain a vital fashion statement for some time to come. Whether or not you want to make a statement with your upper lip is up to you. You can always leave the latest fashion statements to the Kardashians and other celebrities and enjoy them while watching award show red carpet events from the comfort of your own home.
