How is Lip Augmentation Performed?
The lips can be enhanced and augmented by a variety of techniques and some of the most popular methods include:
- Lip Fillers – Injectable lip fillers give the lips a plump and full look and there are multiple options for patients to use. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are made from a substance that is naturally found in the human body. The hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules once it is placed in the lips. In turn, this allows the fillers to give the lips more volume and a plump appearance. Fillers that are collagen-based include bovine-derived lip fillers that are created after being extracted from the tissue of cows. Patients might be allergic to the bovine collagen so it is important to undergo an allergy test before receiving the filler. Human-derived collagen fillers are made from excess skin harvested during surgery or from cadavers. No allergy test is necessary since the collagen is derived from humans.
- Fat Transfer – A fat transfer lip augmentation procedure is performed through the use of fat that comes from the body of the actual patient. The desired amount of fat is removed from one area of the body. It is then purified and injected into the lips of the patients. Since the fat comes from the body of the patient receiving the fat transfer, there is little chance of the body rejecting the fat. The fat that is removed, and later transferred, is normally taken from areas of the body via liposuction. Popular areas to remove the fat from include the thighs or the abdomen.
- Lip Implants – While lip fillers provide temporary results to patients wanting lip augmentation, lip implants provide a permanent amount of augmentation and definition to the lips. The surgeon makes a series of incisions, small in nature, in the area of the lips that are located at the corners of the mouth. Following the incisions, the surgeon creates a thin tunnel in order to easily insert the lip implant and then thread it through the lips. Once the implant is in the designated place in the lips, it is trimmed to its final desired length. Following the trimming process, the incisions are closed. There are a number of popular lip implant options including:
- GORE-TEX® lip implants which feature micropores that allow the natural lip tissue to grow through them so the implants become part of the lip structure
- SoftForm lip implants which have a tubular shape and allow the tissue to grow and anchor to it so there is little chance of implant migration
- AlloDerm® lip implants are created from human skin that is donated which means it does not have much of a chance to cause an allergic reaction
- Upper Lip Lift – An incision is made at the base of the nose so excess skin can be removed. The surgeon then lifts and shortens the upper lip.
