Lip Enhancement Techniques Examined
Lip enhancement can be performed using a number of techniques. Some of these lip augmentation treatments include:
- Fat Transfer – Autologous fat grafting is when fat from the body of the patient is removed, via liposuction, and placed in another area of the body. The transferred fat is then injected into the lips to provide the desired increase in volume. This is a very common procedure carried out to enhance the lip's appearance. The results last a lot longer than those gained from lip fillers. Patients suffering from heart problems, blood clotting disorders, diabetes or any other medical condition that can impact the procedure are not good candidates.
- Lip Implants – This technique is a very efficient method of lip augmentation. Small incisions are made inside the corners of the mouth so the lip implants can be placed in the lips. Lip implants can be made of natural or synthetic materials. The procedure's results also last relatively long. Following the procedure, strenuous exercises and activities that exact stress on the lips or face should be avoided.
- Lip Fillers – Fillers that are made of synthetic biocompatible or natural materials are injected into the lips to provide volume and a plumper look. These types of dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid fillers. They improve the lip's appearance by changing its shape, structure and volume. The results typically last for 6-12 months after which maintenance shots are needed to keep the volume of the lips where the patient desires. There are several lip fillers available for patient use and the most common ones are Restylane, Juvederm, Hylaform, Belotero Balance, Elevess and Prevelle Silk. The procedure is very simple and is performed in less than 30 minutes. It begins with the application of a topical or local numbing agent and then the areas to be injected are carefully marked. Next, the fillers are introduced into the lips with ultra-fine needles. Following the injections, ice may be given to ease discomfort and control swelling but no firm pressure should be put on the treatment area. Lipstick or other lip products are best avoided immediately after the procedure. The results are evident almost immediately and the lips should feel natural once they are fully healed. Side effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary and should only last a few days. They may include bleeding from the injection sites, swelling and bruising, redness and tenderness at the site of the injection, reactivation of cold sores or fever blisters (herpes simplex) of the lips or the area surrounding the lips, lip asymmetry, lumps and irregularities in the lips, infection, ulceration, scarring or stiffening of the lip.
- Lip Lift – Lifting the lips helps patients with a mouth that slopes downward or patients that have loose skin. In order to increase the upper lip, an incision is made under the nose and the skin is shortened to pull the lips upward. To lift a downward turning mouth, small incisions are made on the side of the mouth and the extra skin is removed. The procedure can be done using several techniques but the technique that is chosen is highly specialized to a patient’s specific needs. A central lip lift shortens the upper lip and advances the red portion to help give the appearance of greater volume in the upper lip. A central lip lift is accomplished by making a small incision directly under and hidden by the nose Down-turned corners of the mouth can be addressed by performing a similar surgery as a central lip lift. A small incision is made on the side of the mouth to help place the corners of the mouth in a more attractive position. With either approach, very fine sutures are placed during surgery and generally removed four to five days after surgery. Following the procedure, minimal bruising, swelling and loss of sensation can be experienced. These conditions dissipate naturally and rapidly. The results seen are long-lasting and can be adequately maintained through life-long sun protection and a healthy lifestyle.
Lip Enhancement Remains a Popular Cosmetic Procedure
Lip enhancement procedures are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States as well as around the globe. The relatively short time required for the procedure, as well as the little to no downtime needed for recovery, are some of the reasons that it is so attractive to potential patients. The cost of lip enhancement varies and it is based on geographical location of the procedure, the expertise of the surgeon expertise, the filler being used and if there are any fees charged by the facility or the doctor.
