What is Botox ?

Botox is a popular cosmetic procedure that use botulinum toxin to reduce or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles on the face. In addition to treating issues with the face, Botox can also be used to treat severe underarm sweating, neck spasms and chronic migraines. The Botox injection blocks the signals, in the targeted muscle, that travel from the nerves to the muscles. Since the injected muscle is not able to contract thanks to the blocked signals, the skin will smooth out and the wrinkles will relax and lessen in appearance. Botox is most often used to treat lines on the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes and lines that have formed from excessive frowning. Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment as it can be performed in a few minutes and does not require any type of anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in the office of a doctor or in an accredited medical facility.

Types of Botox

Dysport

Much like Botox, the use of Dysport has been FDA-approved to treat frown lines on the face. Dysport has a higher rate of diffusion, so it is ideal for treating larger areas on the face such as the forehead. Dysport does contain lactose and protein from cow’s milk so it is not a good choice for patients who have milk allergies. The results of Dysport last around 3-4 months so patients will need to have additional procedures to maintain the results.

Xeomin

This product has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of frown lines and it has also been medically approved to correct the issue of muscle spasticity. Some doctors have found that Xeomin might require fewer units to achieve the desired results. Patients who do not see the results they want with Botox and Dysport, or have stopped responding to these treatment options, might be better suited for Xeomin since it does not blend the botulinum toxin with complexing proteins. The results last 3-4 months and patients will need to have additional injections to maintain their results.

Typical Botox results

Patients should be aware of the fact that the results of Botox are not permanent so they will need to have follow-up treatments to maintain the results.

The results can start to be felt within a few days and they should become visible within seven to fourteen days. The skin will no longer be pulling the muscle/the muscle will no longer be able to contract. This will result in a smoother look to the skin and a fading of the wrinkles.

The results of Botox generally last anywhere from four to six months but the results can vary per patient and according to the number of injections placed by the doctor/amount of Botox injected.

Alternatives to Botox

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is used to reduce signs of aging such as wrinkles while also giving the skin a smoother texture. In addition, chemical peels can correct uneven skin pigmentation and acne. Chemical peels can be performed as light, medium or deep peels. They exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin so a new layer of skin will be revealed with an improved texture and tone.

Fractional Lasers

This type of laser treatment improves the tone and texture of the skin by damaging the top layer of the skin to stimulate the healing process. This promotes the production of collagen which improves the texture of the skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines.

Microneedling

A device is used to puncture the skin using fine needles to stimulate the production of collagen. The microinjuries promote the creation of collagen and elastin that improves the look of issues on the skin such as fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and acne scars.

Fillers

While Botox works to erase and reduce wrinkles caused by contracting muscles, fillers work to add volume and lessen the appearance of wrinkles caused by the loss of elasticity in the skin.

Facelift

This surgical technique reduces the appearance of wrinkles when the surgeon lifts and tightens the underlying muscles to give the face a more rejuvenated and contoured look. The procedure also removes excess skin and fat from the face.
