How to Reduce Bags and Hollowness Located Under the Eyes

One of the most common cosmetic issues patients want to address is the presence of bags, darkness or a general hollow look under the eyes. The appearance of bags and other imperfections under the eyes is a problem that is seen among people of all ages. The appearance of eye bags can be the result of saggy skin, excess skin or volume loss in the area. Thankfully, there are multiple treatment options for patients looking to rejuvenate the appearance of the area under the eyes.

Cosmetic Town TV recently took a look at the issue of under eye bags and how to deal with them:

Filler under the Eyes

Fillers are injected into a crease or fold in the skin. Depending on the desires of the patient, the fillers used by the doctor can be permanent or temporary. The doctor will inject the filler in the area under the eye and it is typically made from hyaluronic acid which is a substance that is naturally found in the body. Some of the most popular choices include Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero. These fillers add volume to the area to give it a fuller and more youthful look. They also decrease lines and wrinkles to rejuvenate the appearance of the skin. The length of the results depends on the amount of filler used, the type of filler and where it is injected. In general, the results can last anywhere from six to nine months.

Blepharoplasty Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a surgery that rejuvenates the eyelids. In this case, lower blepharoplasty rejuvenates the look of the lower eyelids. The results can last anywhere from ten to fifteen years if there are no complications. Lower blepharoplasty can be performed by a number of techniques:

  • The typical lower blepharoplasty procedure is designed to remove fat as well as remove any excess skin on the lower lid. The removal of fat can be done through an incision in the lower eyelid and this is known as a transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty. The surgery removes the fat through an incision inside the eyelid and it leaves no visible scar. This technique also preserves the underlying muscle and septum and reduces the risk of the lower eyelid pulling down.
  • An incision is made on the lower eyelid and fat is removed through the incision. This method does leave a scar since it is on the outer part of the eyelid.
  • The surgeon can reposition the fat by moving it from the area where the bags exist and folding it down onto the upper cheek. This eliminates the bags and rejuvenates the look of the lower eyelids.

Fat Transfer to the Area under the Eyes

The process of transferring fat to the areas under the eyes is done to add volume to the hollows under the eyes. The fat that is transferred is taken from the actual patient so there is little chance of an allergic reaction. The fat is often taken from areas such as the thighs or abdomen via liposuction. The fat that is suctioned out of the patient is purified before it is injected back into the targeted treatment area.  Patient will see some side effects such as bruising and swelling but these are temporary and will disappear after a few weeks. The doctor can also massage the treated areas to make sure the transferred fat is distributed evenly and does not look uneven or lumpy. The final results will be seen once the swelling and bruising goes down and can last from three to five years.

Consult with a Board-Certified Doctor

While all of the options listed above provide natural and long-lasting results, the best treatment option for a patient will be determined after a consultation appointment with a board-certified doctor. The doctor will meet with the patient to determine the level of results that he, or she, hopes to achieve with the procedure. The surgeon will examine the patient to determine the best technique to achieve the desired results as well as set realistic expectations so the chances of the patient being disappointed in the final results is minimized.

Under eye bags are a common condition and can easily be treated by the techniques listed above. The results are natural in appearance and refresh and rejuvenate the facial appearance of the patient thanks to a more youthful appearance under the eyes.
