In the past, plastic surgery was viewed as something that was reserved for older patients. However, the perception of millennial plastic surgery is changing as more millennials are visiting the offices of doctors to undergo a variety of procedures.
Some of the patients are requesting plastic surgery while others are looking to undergo cosmetic surgery procedures that are often described as “pre-juvenation” in nature. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery describes these procedures as noninvasive treatments and they include treatments such as Botox, fillers or chemical peels that aim to slow down the results of aging. While plastic surgery often looks to correct or change the results of the aging process, treatments such as Botox look to turn back the clock when it comes to the appearance of patients.
In the results of a survey released back in January, 72\\% of the 110 people surveyed reported an increase in having cosmetic surgery, including treatments such as injectables, in patients under the age of 30. As recently as five years earlier, the group said this number was only 58\\%.
Doctors also predict that there will be more of an emphasis on early maintenance in millennial plastic surgery patients including people in their 20s and 30s. The survey revealed that the patients most likely to consider treatments to turn back the clock were parents with children as well as female millennials ages 18-34. They are looking for treatments that are subtle in appearance while still being noticeable to others.
Doctors report that women are still their most common patients as 86\\% of plastic surgery procedures are performed on women. Some of the most common procedures include rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and revision surgery which is where patients have a surgical procedure in order to fix a previous surgery because of medical necessity or they are not happy with their results. They also enjoyed nonsurgical treatments such as lasers and microdermabrasion. Male patients generally had procedures such as Botox, fillers and rhinoplasty.
There are a number of outside factors that play a part in the choices made by millennial plastic surgery patients. Their appearance on social media, as well as trying to achieve the look of their favorite celebrities, plays a big part in the decisions of millennial plastic surgery patients. Patients bring in photos that can be found on social media that feature their favorite celebrities to try and achieve the look of the celebrity. Millennial plastic surgery patients also don’t often like how they look in their selfies and want to change their appearance to look better on social media. Thanks to the desire to look better on social media, millennials are less likely to try and hide any cosmetic work they had in the past.
When it comes to plastic surgery for patients in their 20s and 30s, doctors need to be careful and consider the type of procedures that they actually need as opposed to just randomly picking a treatment. They don’t treat patients just because they come into the office of a doctor and want to have a procedure. Doctors need to be very selective with the treatments for patients in that age range. Millennial plastic surgery patients might simply want a treatment because they see a photograph of another person on the Internet as opposed to having an actual need for a treatment. Doctors need to consider what patients really need as well as what can be achieved by plastic surgery.
There are some cases where doctors will consider performing procedures on younger patients. For example, patients that have lips that are thin can likely benefit from having lip filler injected into their lips. In addition, Botox can be helpful for a 20 or 30-year-old with fine lines on the forehead.
Before undergoing any type of procedure, millennial plastic surgery patients should do proper research on the doctor they want to visit for plastic surgery or a cosmetic surgery treatment. They should make sure that the doctor is board-certified to perform the procedure of choice. In addition, they need to schedule a consultation appointment with the surgeon to discuss the upcoming procedure.
The doctor will examine the patient and make sure he, or she, is healthy enough to undergo a medical treatment as well as the recovery period that will happen after the treatment. Patients should ask to see “before and after” photos of actual patients treated by the doctor. It is also important for the doctor to answer any and all questions that the patient has about the treatment and also about the final results that can be achieved by plastic surgery. A millennial plastic surgery patient that goes into a procedure with realistic expectations is less likely to be disappointed or surprised by the final results.
Once patients determine that they are comfortable with the final results that can be achieved by the procedure, it is time to schedule the plastic surgery with the doctor.
