Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses a light source and a photosensitizing molecule (a drug that becomes activated by light exposure). A light-sensitizing liquid, cream, or intravenous drug is applied or administered. The next step is the incubation period which can last a few hours or days depending on the severity of the condition being treated. After incubation, the target tissues are exposed to a specific wavelength of light that activates the photosensitizing medication. The mechanism by which tissues are destroyed depends on the presence of activated oxygen molecules.

Ideal candidates are individuals with acne, acne scars or very thin superficial skin cancers called actinic keratoses. Patients suffering from other specific types of cancer cells (as determined by a doctor) are also suitable candidates for the procedure.

The typical cost ranges from $3000-$7000.The final cost depends on surgical facility fees, the surgeon’s level of expertise and the geographic location of the procedure.

Recovery time is usually minimal but there might be swelling, blistering, sunburn sensation, redness or rash. Patients are advised to avoid exposure to sunlight and bright lights. For the best results, 2-3 treatments spaced one month apart are needed. The results from the procedure are long lasting as long as all necessary instructions are followed diligently.

Halo hybrid fractional laser is a skin laser that delivers ablative and non-ablative wavelengths of laser energy at the same time. Ablative lasers, like CO2 and Erbium, vaporize the outer skin layers to effectively resurface and rejuvenate the skin. Non-ablative technologies like Fraxel laser...
