Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing reduces facial wrinkles as well as skin irregularities such as acne scars or blemishes. The procedure directs short pulsating beams of light at the targeted areas of the skin to rejuvenate it using either carbon dioxide (CO2) laser or erbium laser. The CO2 laser removes thin layers of skin. The erbium laser removes surface level skin as well as moderately deep wrinkles or lines on the targeted areas of the face, neck, chest or hands.

Patients with fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth or eyes as well as those with acne scars are good candidates for laser resurfacing. Anyone with a darker skin tone, active acne or stretch marks are not ideal candidates.

The average cost for laser resurfacing is anywhere from $1100-$2300.  The final cost depends on the type of laser used, the number of treatments that need to be performed, any fees charged by the doctor or the facility and the area of the country where the treatment is performed.

The doctor will bandage the treated area after the procedure. This area will need to be cleaned, as well as treated with ointment, for 2-3 weeks to prevent scabs from forming. There will be some swelling, redness and itching after the treatment that resolves on its own. Sunscreen needs to be used to protect the skin after treatment. The results last for several years but the skin will still be subject to the aging process.
