Braces

Cosmetic braces make for a better bite and smile beyond traditional metal braces. Braces with clear, or tooth colored, brackets are virtually transparent brackets and wires. The braces are self-tightening and the brackets come with a proprietary slide mechanism. Clear aligner trays are custom-made to fit over the upper or lower dental arch. A series of trays, varying slightly, are used. After 10-14 days, patients move to another set of trays until the teeth shift into position. Lingual braces are affixed to the back of the teeth rather than the front area. They function much like traditional braces but they are not visible when a person smiles.

Good candidates for cosmetic braces are patients who do not want anyone to know they are wearing braces or an aligner. Patients who want straighter teeth to improve their smile or to make it easier to eat, brush or floss are also ideal patients. Anyone who has crooked teeth, or teeth that are not aligned with each other, are good candidates for wearing braces.

The cost of cosmetic braces varies by the type of treatment performed, the amount of work that needs to be done to align the teeth, the area of the country where the treatment is performed and any fees charged by the doctor or the facility. Clear, or tooth colored, braces cost from $4000-$8500 while clear aligners, such as Invisalign, cost around $3500-$8500. The price range for lingual braces is $7000-$10,000 for the entire treatment.

While wearing any of the braces listed above, patients can expect some soreness and tightness around the teeth and gums as the teeth adjust to the braces being placed. The length of time until the final results can be seen depends on the amount of time the braces need to be worn to achieve the desired results. Regardless, the final results should be permanent as long as the patient practices proper oral hygiene and follows any post-treatment instructions.
