While plastic surgery is performed all over the country, surgeons in New York City are seeing a spike in the number of parents having procedures this summer. Why are parents choosing summertime to have plastic surgery?
Their kids are away at summer camp or off visiting relatives for the summer.
According to Dr. Stafford R. Broumand, of 740 Park Plastic Surgery, “Especially here in New York City, a lot of kids go off to summer camp for three, five or seven weeks, and this way parents can shield their children from the surgery they’re having, and they have the downtime to recover.”
The New York Post reported on a mother from Queens who waited for her kids, ages 7 and 9, to go to camp before she had a tummy tuck and a breast lift. The 35-year-old mom felt it would be easier on her to wait until the kids were away so she could rest and recover. Plus, she realizes that kids sometimes let secrets slip so she didn’t want them accidently telling anyone about her surgeries. When asked why she wanted to have plastic surgery, the Queens mom said that her body changed after two pregnancies and working out and CrossFit did not restore her pre-baby appearance.
It’s not just female parents that are having work done this summer. Dr. Elie Levine, who has an office located in New York’s Upper East Side, says many men are also having work done to combat their “dad bod”. Dr. Levine says some dads visiting his office get lipo to get rid of their love handles while others have transplants or surgery to remove their “man boobs”. Dr. Levine says summertime is “perfect from a scheduling perspective, because it’s definitely easier for both working moms and stay-at-home moms to get work done while their kids are at sleep away camp and the dad procedures are non-invasive enough where they can work from home for a week.”
If parents can’t get the surgery dates they want during the summer, many of them will push their surgery back until the next summer. These parents would rather wait until the next year to undergo surgery rather than subject themselves to questions about their new appearance from their children.
