Is Social Media Shaping Plastic Surgery Trends in 2018?

Posted February 16, 2018

According to an annual review of plastic surgery trends by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), plastic surgeons reported a rise in the demand for invasive and noninvasive procedures. The average number of procedures has grown by 25\\% since 2012. In addition, over 80\\% of treatments in 2017 were cosmetic non-surgical procedures.

One major reason for the rise in the number of procedures is the growth of the “selfie culture”. Patrick Byrne, the director of the Division of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University and AAFPRS board member, says both younger and middle aged people increasingly perceive themselves through the “lens” of social media. The AAFPRS survey revealed that 55\\% of facial plastic surgeons saw patients who had procedures, in part, to look better in their selfies. This number was up 13\\% from 2016.

On the other hand, surgeons say patients are now more empowered when making the decision to have a procedure thanks to social media.

The 2018 AAFPRS survey reported there are a number of minimally invasive procedures that look to stand out from the crowd. They include nonsurgical nose jobs, eyelid procedures to make a person look less tired and PRP injections to rejuvenate and regenerate soft tissue.
