What are the causes for plastic surgery addiction?

Humans are concerned a lot about looking better and feeling better. Over time, a lot of emphasis has been placed on "having the perfect body". There are a number of ways to get the body into shape. Some people head to the gym and train to shed some unnecessary body fat and build muscles. Others choose to augment their appearance through surgical procedures. Plastic surgeries have been a revelation in transforming bodies of people all over the world. One issue is not the plastic surgery but the dependence on plastic surgeries to create drastic changes in the body. Numerous surgical procedures could expose the patient to different risks and hazards. Also, patients with a record of numerous previous plastic surgery procedures may have an increased chance of experiencing complications after their latest surgery. In modern-day society, certain people can't seem to get enough of plastic surgeries. They've done a number of procedures on their body and are still looking forward to more. This might be the result of an addiction to improving their appearance and having to resort to different procedures to achieve this.

Causes of Plastic Surgery Addiction

Some of the main causes of plastic surgery addiction include:

Body Dysmorphic Disorder, aka BDD, is an anxiety disorder related to the appearance of a person. Basically, the temperament of such an individual is impacted by how they look. It can force these types of people to make some drastic changes when they are not satisfied with their appearance in order to keep themselves happy. Common Symptoms in people who suffer from BDD include constant and obsessive worry about the perceived flaws in their physical appearance and compulsive habits due to their obsession for perfection such as picking their skin.

BDD can express itself in different levels in different individuals. The severity of the BDD can often influence the daily activities of individuals as they can be easily offended when not satisfied with how they look. Feelings of shame, depression and dissatisfaction can lead to continuous attempts at perfection through endless surgeries. They will always try to correct a flaw in their physical appearance that is visible only to them.

Social Pressure can be caused by social media convincing different individuals that they need plastic surgery for a better appearance such as the ones they view online. In connection in the section above, social media can also lead to issues such as Snaphat dysmorphia. It's now common to find a number of celebrities or superstars who have become famous due to body enhancements. A good example of this is the Kardashian Family with different members of the family going under the knife. Basically, they have been able to consistently parade themselves with their breast and butt enhancements which have helped some of them be viewed as the most attractive people on earth. They haven't been shy about it and it seems a lot of people are now interested in joining them. In addition to the Kardashians, there are now countless stories of other celebrities who have altered their appearances through different surgical procedures. People adore these stars and some would stop at nothing to look just as good as them. It's simply an unspoken rule about looking like the "most popular celebrities" around.

Age is also a big factor in the decision to have plastic surgery. With the advancement in age of people from all walks of life, there will be changes that occur in the body. Notable among them is the loss of volume, form and shape in different parts of the body. As a result, there is an occurrence of wrinkles and sagging breasts. A lot of individuals learn to be comfortable with changes in their appearance while others find it hard to deal with. The ones that find it hard to deal with are the group of people that want to turn back the hands of time and slow down the process of getting older. These individuals look to plastic surgery to correct whatever defects they may have picked up over the years. Different changes and surgeries here and there promise to have them looking ageless and a lot of people would happily jump at the chance to not show signs of getting older. The constant need to beat nature and the aging process could easily develop into a plastic surgery addiction.

Identifying Plastic Surgery Addiction

While it is easy to speaking about plastic surgery addiction, identifying it is another thing entirely. Plastic surgery addiction can be very detrimental to anyone. Individuals suffering from extreme cases of this addiction can easily find themselves obsessing about their appearance. They also suffer from an assumption that a better appearance holds the key to solving all of their problems. There is a risk of spending too much money and too much time on the quest to simply look better by undergoing different procedures. In addition, the health risks associated with numerous surgical procedures makes it important to identify occurrences of addiction.

Surgeons don't just make an uninformed decision to perform plastic surgery on patients. An experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon will perform a consultation with the patient before the procedure is done. The most effective way for doctors to identify plastic surgery addiction is dependent on observation and comments from the patient about their reasons for wanting to undergo surgery. As such, doctors are charged with determining if a surgical procedure is one that will improve the standard of living of the patient or if it just the result of an obsessive desire to constantly look better.
