The start of the year always includes a look back at the past with news stories and statistics that share popular trends and items among the general public from the past year or two. The review of past trends also applies to the plastic surgery industry as industry organizations share the most popular procedures picked by patients in the past twelve months. According to data recently published by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), liposuction takes the top spot over the previous top pick of breast augmentation.
Our examination of these plastic surgery statistics begins with this informative video from Cosmetic Town:
The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported that the body contouring procedure known as liposuction accounted for 14.8% of cosmetic surgeries performed across the globe. This number was enough to place it higher than breast augmentation which only accounted for just over 13% of the cosmetic surgeries performed in the world.
The elevation of liposuction over breast augmentation was just one of the changing trends shown in the field of aesthetic medicine. Between the years 2020 and 2021, there were over 30-million surgical and non-surgical procedures performed around the world and this statistic showed an increase of 19.3% between the two years. In addition, the data included in the annual survey published by the ISAPS also suggests that the cosmetic surgery industry is showing some recovery from two consecutive years of declines related to COVID-19 shutdowns and safety measures put in place in the cosmetic surgery industry to protect patients from COVID-19.
In addition, the total number of surgical procedures performed grew by over thirty-three percent between the years 2017 and 2021. During the same time period, non-surgical procedures (such as the most popular choice of Botox) grew by a total amount of more than fifty-four percent.
While liposuction grew enough in popularity to leap over breast augmentation as the most popular surgical choice, breast augmentation itself saw a small increase of only 0.5% over the four-year period of 2017 and 2021. The editor of the report, Dr. Gianluca Campiglio, pointed out that this small increase is actually a slight bit of a decline when compared to other cosmetic surgery procedures. The doctor started this downward trend might be related to concerns over BIA-ALCL which is a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, AKA a cancer of the immune system, that has been attributed in the past to breast implants in the body of patients.
Dr. Campiglio also noted the large increase in the number of patients who want to have their breast implants removed. It was reported that breast implant removal procedures grew in performance by numbers of almost fifty percent around the world. In a press release, the doctor said, “The lower increase in breast augmentation, and related increase in implant removals reflects our experience following publication of reports on BIA-ALCL in the preceding year.”
The doctor also feels that a growth in liposuction numbers can be seen as part of a wider growth in the number of people interested in undergoing a body contouring procedure. In fact, more than 1.9-million liposuction procedures were reported as being performed across the globe in 2021 which is a growth of almost twenty-five percent from the previous year.
In addition to the treatments discussed above, some other popular procedures discussed in the report included rhinoplasty (AKA a nose job) and abdominoplasty (AKA a tummy tuck). Plus, eyelid surgery was revealed to be the most popular choice for male patients and the third most-commonly performed procedure all across the world in 2021.
The report also showed that a thigh lift was one of the quickest growing choices of cosmetic surgery among patients as it increased in performance over fifty-three percent from 2020. When it came to non-invasive cosmetic procedures, there was an increase of over thirty percent in the use of hyaluronic acid which is a substance that is commonly injected into the body as a facial filler for patients who have lost some amount of volume in their face.
The United States takes the top spot in the number of cosmetic surgeons in the world. The United States was found to have around 7000 surgeons in this medical field which resulted in almost twenty-five percent of the cosmetic procedures performed around the world taking place in the United States. The number of cosmetic surgeons in the United States was far ahead of the second place country of Brazil (at 8.9%).
The most popular medical tourism destinations were Turkey, Colombia, Mexico, and Thailand.
The survey findings were based on data collected by the ISAPS from over one thousand board-certified cosmetic surgeons. Overall, the organization represents over 5600 doctors who are located in 117 countries across the globe.
