The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has released its annual list of the most popular procedures among Americans. According to the report, there were 17.1-million minimally invasive and surgical cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the calendar year of 2016. When compared to 2015 results, the total number of minimally invasive cosmetic choices increased by 3\\\\% while surgical procedures grew by 4\\\\%.
According to the president of the ASPS, Dr. Debra Johnson.
“One trend we are seeing with fat involves an increase in fat grafting procedures. Plastic surgeons harvest a patient’s unwanted fat from their abdomen using liposuction and then inject it to lift and rejuvenate other areas such as the face, buttock and even the breast.”
Johnson went on to say that fat grafting results tend to last longer since the fat comes from the patient. There was a 72\\\\% increase in the use of fat to increase the breasts and a 26\\\\% increase of butt augmentation using fat.
For the very first time, labiaplasty made the list. Labiaplasty alters the labia appearance and is performed by removing any uneven or excess tissue from the vaginal lips. There was a 39\\\\% increase in labiaplasty surgeries as more than 12,000 were performed last year.
Even though labiaplasty joined the list this year, it wasn’t the only procedure that saw gains in popularity. Facelifts bounced back into the Top 5 while fat freezing procedures and non-invasive skin tightening techniques also saw increases in popularity.

Although the end of the year is many months away, it will be interesting to see if the most popular choices of 2016 remain the same at the end of 2017. It is hard to predict future statistics because surgical techniques are always evolving and improving. There might be an entry on the 2017 “Most Popular” list that hasn’t even been invented or approved yet by medical professionals.
