The breasts stand out for a variety of reasons including their size, volume and the way they sit on the body. Some women have large breasts that are youthful in appearance while other women have breasts that seem to be sagging thanks to the effects of gravity as a person ages. Regardless of the size or shape of the breasts, they catch the eyes of both men and women and scientists have recently used technology that tracks the movements of the eyes to pinpoint the area of the breasts that is most viewed by men and women.
The authors of a paper published in the medical journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery discussed a study involving 50 men and 50 women. Scientists used eye-tracking technology to identify the part of the breast that men and women look at the most on a regular basis.
The participants of the study were asked to look at images of eight types of female breasts so they could consider the symmetry and aesthetics of the breasts. The images of the breasts they were viewing were made of varying cup sizes as well as various levels of sagging.
The scientists used the eye-tracking device so they could chart and record the particular area of the breast that was most viewed by the participants of the study. The eye-tracking device was also used to track exactly how long the study participants viewed that certain portion of the breast. To avoid any type of bias and also avoid influencing the results in any way, the participants were not informed that the movements of their eyes were being documented until after they had completed the exercise.
The results of the study showed that the study volunteers were most likely to view the lower breast, as well as the nipple of the breast, for the longest period of time.
The researchers behind the study hope that their work with this project will lead to greater results in both plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The co-author of the study, Dr. Piotr Pietruski, professor in the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Poland’s W. Orlowski Memorial Hospital, told Newsweek, “Terms such as ‘beauty’ or ‘aesthetics’ are subjective and thus poorly defined and understood.”
In other words, Dr. Pietruski means there is not a standard or universal method that is available for analyzing the results of aesthetic and breast surgery. Dr. Pietruski went on to explain, “The opinions of medical professionals and patients regarding the breasts’ attractiveness are often very different.”
He added, “It might seem obvious that a patient’s opinion should always matter the most. On the other hand, her subjective perception of the outcome might be influenced by many factors, including negative experience with medical treatment.”
“Eye-tracking technology enables quantitative analysis of observers’ visual perception of specific stimuli, such as comprehension of breast aesthetics and symmetry. Data such as initial fixation points or gaze duration on a specific region expands our knowledge about this process. We believe that eye-tracking technology could help the researchers to create a reliable universal method of breast attractiveness assessment.”
It should be noted that Dr. Pietruski said that the movement of the eyes does not reflect the opinion of the breast held by the person viewing the breast.
“Because of its preliminary character, our study included a relatively small group of raters with the same cultural background. In order to have a significant impact on the field of plastic surgery, eye-tracking technology requires a vast amount of data for analysis and comparison.”
In order to attain the “vast amount of data” necessary to have the significant impact described above, there would need to be additional studies that involved a larger number of people and the larger number of people would also need to span several different cultures.
As mentioned above, the breasts are one of the most viewed parts of the body on women of all ages. In order to gain, or maintain, the appearance of the breasts that they desire, many female patients decide to undergo cosmetic breast surgery to rejuvenate the appearance of the breasts and give them a more youthful look.
From breast augmentation using fat grafting or breast implants to a breast lift and (even) breast reduction, there are multiple options available to patients looking to make a change in the appearance of their breasts. The breasts are one of the most prominent areas on the body and it makes sense that the eye would naturally be drawn to their position on the body.
Patients that are interested in making a change in the size, shape or contour of their breasts should schedule a consultation appointment with a board-certified doctor that is experienced in performing plastic surgery on the breasts. The doctor can examine the breasts of a patient and also determine the best medical option to achieve the final results desired by the person.
