A hair transplant is performed to address areas of balding or thinning hair on the scalp. The final results give patients a hairline that has greater fullness as well as a more youthful look. The medical professionals that perform a hair transplant have years of experience in this medical specialty as well as board-certification from one (or more) medical boards. Dr. Manu Gujrati has over ten years of experience helping patients gain a full and natural looking head of hair, but this doctor recently decided to address his own hair loss and become a hair transplant patient!
The Cosmetic Town News Team recently featured the story of Dr. Gujrati and was able to able to get some personal insights from the doctor:
Dr. Manu Gujrati is a surgeon, and practice partner, at Parsa Mohebi Hair Restoration in San Francisco. In an interview on the website of the medical practice, Dr. Gujrati said, “I know that some people hesitate to take the step towards hair restoration surgery and I want them to have a real view of what it is like. Plus, this is the ultimate way for me to truly understand what my patients go through by actually stepping into their shoes.”
Dr. Gujrati added, “The idea of having my own hair transplant has been on my radar for a little while. I have had the opportunity to meet many talented and experienced surgeons over the years but the timing never felt right to have the procedure.” After joining forces with Dr. Mohebi and getting to know each other on a personal level, Dr. Gujrati realized “we share the same passion for providing the best results for our patients. After having many private conversations about the level of caring and commitment we both have for our patients, the idea of taking this journey together was an obvious decision.” In order to undergo his transplant procedure, Dr. Gujrati made the journey from Northern California to Los Angeles to become a patient of Dr. Mohebi.
A hair transplant moves hair grafts from one area on the body of the patient to the balding or thinning areas of the scalp. The hair is usually taken from the donor area of the scalp which is traditionally the hair on the back and sides of the scalp (as this hair is resistant to balding).
In a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant, the hair grafts are removed in units of one to four hairs. The surgeon uses a small instrument (sharp or a dull punch) to make an incision in order to remove the hair graft. Once the hair grafts are removed, they are counted and sorted before they are placed in the balding area/recipient area of the scalp.
The hair grafts that are harvested during an FUE procedure are removed individually so there is not a large and/or noticeable strip scar on the scalp that can occur using other hair transplant techniques (Strip FUT which is also known as Follicular Unit Transplantation).
An ideal candidate for a hair transplant includes:
Patients need to be aware of the fact that the transplanted hair will fall out after it is placed in the scalp. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about as it is part of the hair transplant process. The transplanted hair will start to grow again after three or four months, and the final results will be seen anywhere from eight to twelve months after the surgery.
The final results are permanent, and patients will enjoy a fuller and more youthful look to the previously balding area on the scalp.
Patients should be aware of the fact that balding or thinning hair can still occur on the sections of the scalp where the hair transplant was not performed. They might want to have an additional procedure in the future to address the other areas on the scalp where hair loss is still happening.
When it comes to his own personal hair transplant journey, Dr. Gujrati realizes he is in a unique position to be able to share his personal hair restoration experience with the public. On the website of Parsa Mohebi Hair Restoration, he stated “My hair transplant surgery puts me in an educational position that not many other surgeons are able to experience.” The doctor realizes the hair transplant experience can be a scary idea for some people as they might not know exactly what to expect, or what is involved, in having the procedure. That is one of the reasons he decided to give patients “an inside view of what they will experience physically and emotionally. If my personal journey can help someone make the decision to gain the hairline they have always desired, I am more than happy to put their mind at ease.”
