Posted April 27, 2023
Learn about eyelid surgery

While you might be familiar with traditional eyelid surgery which is also known as blepharoplasty, you might not be as knowledgeable about double eyelid surgery. This is a type of blepharoplasty where creases in the upper eyelids are formed to create the appearance of double eyelids. If you want to know more about double eyelid surgery and why patients have the procedure, take a look at the information in this article.

Double Eyelids – Who Wants Them?

There are some people who do not need double eyelid surgery because they are born with visible eyelid creases that are commonly known as double eyelids. On the other hand, those who are born without creases in the eyelids have an appearance this is known as monolid or a single lid. You do need to know that no matter which eyelid appearance you are born with, there is nothing that is medically wrong with either eyelid type.

There are various reasons that you might want to have double eyelid surgery. Some of the most popular reasons include:

  • The eyelids that you currently have are interfering with your vision
  • You want your eyes to have a larger appearance thanks to double eyelids
  • You have one double eyelid and one single eyelid, and you want them to match

Double Eyelid Surgery – How is it Performed?

How Double Eyelid Surgery is PerformedDouble eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, and it can be performed using both incisional and non-incisional techniques.

An incisional double eyelid surgery is an ideal option if you need to have extra fat or skin removed, have thick skin in the treated area, or want to gain permanent results. The procedure starts with the targeted area for the double eyelid line being measured and marked with a pen. The surgeon will create several small incisions along the double eyelid line so the skin in the marked area can be removed. In addition, excess fat and the orbicularis oculi muscle that are located between the incisions will be removed. Then, the incisions are closed by the surgeon using stitches or skin glue that will need to be removed by the surgeon within a week after the surgery.

A non-incisional double eyelid procedure also starts with the measuring and marking of the eyelid. The surgeon will then make a series of tiny punctures in the skin along the line. Sutures will be placed through the punctures as well as tightened until the desired appearance of the crease is formed. The sutures will not be visible as they remain under the skin, so they don’t need to be removed. The results of this technique can be reversed if you want to eliminate the appearance of a double eyelid at some point in the future.

Double Eyelid Surgery – Possible Risks

The risks involved with the incisional technique include an infection, scarring that is visible to others, and changes to your vision that can be temporary or permanent.

The risks of the non-incisional technique include visible puncture marks when you close your eyes, an infection, and the possibility of the double fold loosening or having an asymmetrical appearance.

Double Eyelid Surgery – Recovery Period

If you have an incisional procedure, the initial part of the healing process can take up to two weeks. Overall, it can take several months for you to completely heal. During the recovery process, you might experience some bruising and swelling, bleeding, dry eyes, and changes in the sensation of your skin.

If you undergo the non-incisional technique, you can expect to be fully recovered within two weeks.

If your eyes are experiencing any irritation after either technique, you can use cold compresses if they are recommended by your doctor. The surgeon might recommend you wear sunglasses when you are outside, and you might be advised to apply a prescribed medication to the area that is irritated.

Double Eyelid Surgery – How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of double eyelid surgery varies across the country, but it usually costs between $3200 and $4200. The final cost depends on the area of the country where it is performed, the technique used by the surgeon, the complexity of the procedure, and any fees that are charged by either the doctor or the medical facility.

Health insurance might cover some of the cost if the double eyelid surgery is being performed because your eyelids are interfering with your vision.

Before you make the final decision to have double eyelid surgery, you need to schedule a consultation appointment with the surgeon you have in mind to perform the procedure. The doctor can explain the benefits of the surgery and also determine if you are an ideal candidate for either of the techniques. The surgeon will also take the time to learn the type of results you hope to gain from having the procedure and also set realistic expectations so you will have a better idea of the results you can expect to see after the surgery.
