Los Angeles and Beverly Hills Hair Transplant Explained

A hair transplant is when hair follicles are moved from one area to another to restore hair in the balding area. Hair transplantation typically involves harvesting hair follicles from the donor areas on the back, or sides, of the head. However, hair can be taken from other parts of the body such as the chest or beard. The harvested hair is transplanted in naturally occurring follicular units in order to provide the balding area with hair that looks natural.

Hair transplants are carried out primarily to add more hair to an area on a patient's head that may be thinning or balding. The latest research conducted showed that, globally, about 60\\\\% of men and 50\\\\% of women experience some form of hair loss over the course of their lifetime.

The first hair transplant was performed in 1939 in Japan with single scalp hairs. In the following decades, physicians developed a “plug” technique which involved transplanting large tufts of hair. Over time, surgeons began using mini-grafts and micro-grafts to minimize the appearance of transplanted hair on the scalp.

There are a variety of hair restoration techniques including:

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – This technique involves the doctor individually harvesting follicular units, or individual hair grafts, from the donor area. The hair is removed in a less invasive manner because the follicular grafts are removed one at a time. Thus, there is no linear scar. However, with this method, a smaller number of grafts can be harvested during each session than the strip method.

Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) – The transplanting of hair units in their natural grouping is done via a strip method. Follicular units contain one to four hair follicles wrapped by a protein sheath. The doctor removes a strip of skin from the donor area and then harvests hair grafts for transplantation from the strip. The hair is transplanted in its natural direction.

Advantages and disadvantages of FUT over FUE

The main advantage of FUT is that larger graft numbers are possible and shaving the back of the head isn't necessary.  It should also be noted that FUT tends to produce a better quality of graft in comparison to FUE.

The main disadvantage is that a linear scar is left where the strip was taken which may limit the length of the hair to a grade 3 or 4 haircut. A lot of patients opt for FUE solely because of this fact and this is especially true of younger patients or those who might want to cut their hair very short in the future. FUT is also considered to be a more invasive procedure and is associated with a slight increase in post-operative pain.

What to Expect after a Hair Transplant

  • Both techniques take several hours to several days to complete though this really depends on the amount of work performed by the surgeon
  • Once the surgery is done, the surgeon will gently remove the bandages used. The treated areas may be swollen so the surgeon might inject triamcinolone to keep the swelling down
  • Patients will likely feel pain or soreness at the transplant site as well as in the area where hair was taken from.
  • Following the procedure, medications are prescribed as part of the post-op regimen including pain medications such as ibuprofen (Advil), antibiotics to prevent infections, anti-inflammatory options to relieve swelling and medications such as finasteride (Propecia) or minoxidil (Rogaine) to help stimulate hair growth

Hair Transplant Surgery Aftercare Tips

  • It is advisable that patients refrain from washing their hair for a few days and, while washing the hair, only mild shampoos should be used for the first few weeks
  • Patients should be able to return to work and normal activities in about 3 days
  • It is recommended that patients refrain from using a hard brush or comb on the new grafts for about 3 weeks
  • Patients should also not put on a hat or a pullover shirt and jacket until the doctor says it is okay to do so without harming the grafts
  • Some hairs will fall out as part of the regrowth process

These hair restoration techniques provide a fuller head of hair along with greater density and a natural appearance to the transplanted hair
