Yikes! A former Encino plastic surgeon made a major case for always researching your doctors on Tuesday when he was sentenced to five years in prison. The crime? Administering a deadly mix of drugs to a 61-year-old woman during a marathon 10-hour liposuction session.
The ex-doctor, Ehab Aly Mohamed, was convicted Jan. 21 of one count each of involuntary manslaughter and elder abuse for killing one patient and injuring another, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
According to prosecutors, the victim, Sharon Carpenter, was given a lethal cocktail of fentanyl, lidocaine, and oxycodone during a procedure that took place on Aug. 22, 2010.
Months before that, another elderly patient fell victim to Mohamed’s abuse. 77-year-old Zackie Handy endured a lengthy liposuction procedure in Mohamed’s office. This resulted in lasting health issues amounting to elder abuse, the prosecutors stated.
The Medical Board of California, in an effort to strip Mohamed of his medical license, alleged that he failed to inform patients of treatment risks, having inadequate staff and equipment, and lacking the proper training.
According to the Los Angeles Times, “State medical officials barred him in 2010 from performing cosmetic surgeries, and Mohamed agreed to surrender his medical license in 2013.”
In addition to his prison sentence (which, frankly, doesn’t feel lengthy enough for murdering someone), Mohamed was order by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic to pay approximately $5 million to one victim’s family in accordance with a previous civil judgment.
The cherry on top of this whole mess? Mohamed had been previously convicted of forgery and burglary in a separate incident.
The lesson to be learned here? Always, always, always do research on a doctor before selecting him for your treatment!
