Preventing hair loss and correction

Postby Ronald on Fri May 01, 2009 2:03 pm

:( I was looking at the Norwood Graph and I was noticing that I fit in with the level 2 picture. I need to know how this works. Some one told me it's genetic and if that's the case I'm in trouble. Here's my question(s):

1. How early does one see hair loss?
2. How early can you stop the process?
3. Is it ever too late to get hair loss fixed?
4. Is it permanent or will I end up losing it all anyway?
5. Is it REALLY expensive or should I just give in to my hat?

I got more questions but I want to see what I'll get from these. Anything and everything will help. Thank you!

Good Questions Ron. I answer them in the order you asked:
1. Male patterned hair loss could be seen as early as 16, which is very rare. In most men with genetic predisposition hair loss starts at early 20s and continues actively til late 30s.

2. How early can you stop the process? With current medications such as Propeica or finasteride, the process of typical men hair loss could be stopped as early as 18 because the medication use before 18 is not recommended. However, thanks to the microscopic method to evaluate hair loss, there is not a minimum age for hair transplant so everyone who truly have a diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia or male patterned baldness can be a candidate for hair transplant and restore the youth of his face doing hair restoration procedures.

3. Is it ever too late to get hair loss fixed? The answer is no; unless you have any other conditions or unstable donors that again could be seen with other hair loss conditions or skin disorders.

4. Is it permanent or will I end up losing it all anyway? Male patterned baldness at its early stages could be prevented by medications to some degrees. Although, we do not have any medication that completely stop balding process, new medications or hair multiplication technology may be able to solve the balding problem once and for all.

5. Is it REALLY expensive or should I just give in to my hat? Hair Transplant cost is not really that expensive, considering the other cosmetic procedure prices. The cost of hair restoration surgery has been declining in the last few years and it is possible to get affordable high quality hair transplants these days.

Good luck to you,

Hi doctor,
Can hair transplant be used for reinforcement of eyebrow in a woman who lost her eyebrows because of thyroid disease? If yes, would it be permanent or it may fall out for the same reason?

Thanks for your response,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

This is a great question. Hair transplant can successfully reverse the hair loss or thinning in the eyebrow area. The mechanism of eyebrow hair loss could be due to congenital, medical or trauma. Regardless of the cause of eyebrow loss, eyebrow hair transplant could be successfully done. You can visit the website of US Hair Restoration to get more information on eyebrow hair transplant.

If you lost your hair in eyebrow due to hypothyroidism (low function of thyroid), you can reverse it with hair transplant if the the thyroid condition is completely back to normal with medications (euthyroid state). The result is great and recovery is complete with one or two procedures depends upon the degree of hair loss and the quality of donor hair.

Good luck to you,

Thanks Doctor for the information on eyebrow hair transplant.
Can you tell me what is going to be the cost of a hair transplant surgery in your Los Angeles office? Can everyone has a hair transplant to have a fuller eyebrow or you should have hair loss there first before you can be considered for a eyebrow implantation? I did not lose eyebrows but always had thin eyebrows. Can I change the shape of my eyebrows. I know that I can pluck the ones that are out of my desired shape, but I need to bring it higher a bit. So my question is, can I bring it higher by removing low laying hair and transplanting on the top portion?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Marlina,

I do not perform Thyroid surgery in my practice. My practice at US Hair Restoration is focused on hair restoration and some other cosmetic procedures. I am sure you can find many sites with reports on the Thyroid surgeons on your area.

Good luck,

Doctor Mohebi,

Do you recommend ALL patients wait until a certain age to be considered for hair transplant surgery or can the procedure be performed on patients at any age? My little brother is noticing some thinning and balding in the front of his hair line-- but he is only 19 years old! Would it make sense for him to look into surgery this young? And, if he were to have the surgery performed, but continued losing hair in different areas over the years, does this ruin his chances to have the surgery performed later in his life? We would both really appreciate your opinion on the matter before we continue with scheduling him for a consultation. Thanks!

Signed,
A concerned older sister

Some men start to see early signs of male patterned hair loss at early ages. I have seen it as early as 16. patients who see those early signs should start using medical treatments to prevent or at least slow down their hair loss.

Rogaine could be used for those stages and for the patients who are older than 18 finasteride could be used. Hair transplant could be considered at early ages as long as the hair transplant surgeon has a good understanding of the final pattern of hair loss that could be obtained through physical examination, family history and microscopic evaluation of the scalp and hair.

Hair transplant surgeons used to recommend hair transplant only after the age 24. However, thanks to microscopic method of evaluation of hair loss final pattern, we can predict where hair loss patients area heading and recommend hair transplant at early ages.

Wow, it is amazing to hear that technological advances like this now make it possible for young patients like my brother to have needed surgeries at early ages. I think what I admire more than the technological advances though is that you do not force or advise patients to have surgery performed when it is not needed. It was really good to meet you on Monday, both my brother and I were glad to hear that he has not hit a severe enough stage of balding to be looking into transplants and we really respected your concern for his later results rather than how much your company could make off of his case (unlike the other two unnamed offices that we visited). Thank you again for your concern doctor, and as recommended by you, my brother will continue using Rogaine until he comes back to follow-up with you in 6 months to a year.
