Eye Bag Surgery

As a person ages, the bags under their eyes can give a permanently tired appearance thanks to droopy skin and a puffy appearance. Eye bag surgery, AKA lower blepharoplasty, removes fatty tissue and excess skin from under the eyes as well as rejuvenates the appearance of the area by smoothing the Crow’s feet around the eyes. Eye bag surgery can be performed via traditional blepharoplasty (an incision is made below the eyelashes), canthopexy (tightens the lower lid and attaches the lower lid muscles to a higher position via stitches) and transconjunctival blepharoplasty (the surgeon makes a cut in the lower eyelid and then removes any excess fat).

Ideal candidates for eye bag surgery include patients with excess fat and skin beneath the eyes, those who always look tired even though they get enough sleep and someone with the appearance of bags under the eyes no matter what time of day the bags are visible. Good candidates should also not have any health conditions like glaucoma and high blood pressure. These conditions should be treated in advance before undergoing lower blepharoplasty surgery. Patients also need to have enough skin laxity to tighten the skin and remove excess fat.

The cost of eye bag surgery depends on the technique used by the surgeon, the extent of the eye bags being treated, any fees charged by the doctor or the facility and the area of the country where the procedure is performed. The average cost of lower blepharoplasty runs anywhere from $4000-$6500.

There will be some swelling and bruising after the procedure that will last for 7-10 days. Patients should use an ointment given to them by the surgeon to reduce dryness and lubricate the treated area. The final results are considered to be permanent. Patients should enjoy a youthful and rejuvenated appearance thanks to the removal of fatty tissue and excess skin from below the eyes. Many patients gain more self-confidence thanks to the refreshed appearance under the eyes.
